Resilience on the Green: Reflections

At a recent AWGN women's golf event, our group found ourselves discussing the remarkable ways that golf teaches resilience to young players. Walking the fairways together, we reflected on our own experiences and the invaluable life lessons this sport has taught us.

One of us recounted the story of her daughter, Emma, who, despite missing a crucial putt during a tournament, learned to focus on what she could improve rather than dwell on her mistake. "Golf has given Emma the confidence to bounce back from setbacks and grow as a player," she explained.

The conversation then shifted to adaptability and emotional regulation. Jen, another member of our group, shared her nephew's impressive ability to maintain composure during a sudden storm. "Watching him adjust to tackle the changing conditions was inspiring," Jen said. "Golf has nurtured a sense of emotional resilience in him that extends far beyond the golf course."

We also discussed the importance of fostering social connections through golf. "My son has made lifelong friends through junior golf days," Jess told us. "The support they provide one another is remarkable, and they share in each other's wins and challenges."

Our discussion made it clear that golf is more than just a sport - it's a platform for nurturing resilience and personal growth. As mothers, sisters, and friends, we are grateful for the ways this sport empowers young children, equipping them with the skills to navigate life's challenges with grace and determination.
