Meet Teresa Clarke, AWGN's First Ambassador for Western Australia!

Teresa Clarke's journey into supporting women's golf in Western Australia began when she started playing golf as a junior. However, the lack of support and female peers led her to give up the sport. Years later, observing similar challenges faced by her daughter and herself, Teresa became determined to make a difference in women's golf. Driven by her passion for encouraging more women to join the sport and expand their networks, she took on leadership roles within her local golf club and actively participated in women's golf events. Her upbringing and cultural values further fuelled her dedication, emphasising the importance of collective support in nurturing individuals. Teresa's efforts have positively impacted countless women and girls in the Western Australian golf community, and her appointment as the second Female Director of Golf at her home club The Vines, demonstrates her unwavering commitment to creating a more inclusive and empowering environment for all.

In her efforts to support and grow women's golf in Western Australia, Teresa has faced several challenges, primarily stemming from traditional views on women's capabilities in the sport. Some men in the industry and at club level doubted women's ability to play, understand, or lead in golf. This has created a need for women to prove themselves in order to gain acceptance in certain clubs.

To address these challenges, Teresa's club has joined several local initiatives, which aim to promote inclusivity and equality in the sport. Her club has demonstrated progressiveness and inclusivity by appointing women to leadership roles, including her role as Director of Golf, a Ladies Captain, and a female General Manager. Additionally, they offer women-only golf lessons and host events like the International Red Day to encourage women to participate and share their love for the game with others.

Teresa has a clear vision for the future of women's golf in Western Australia, with several opportunities on the horizon:

  • An increase in women's participation and engagement within the golf community.

  • More flexible tee times and membership categories tailored specifically for women.

  • Expanded beginner programs that bridge the gap between social golf and club competitions.

  • Greater representation of women in golf

  • Joining nation-wide networking and mentorship events organised by groups like AWGN, fostering connections among women in golf across Australia.

In addition to her career in the insurance industry and her work with Camp Quality, Teresa dedicates her time to volunteer work in various organisations. Her ability to balance these commitments is rooted in the profound sense of fulfilment she gains from helping others and the importance of giving back that was instilled in her from a young age. She believes that if everyone contributed a few hours a month to volunteering, it would spread joy and happiness to countless individuals and organisations.

For professionals looking to excel in their careers while making time for their personal passions and volunteer work, Teresa offers the following advice:

  1. Set clear goals and create a structured plan, ensuring that each task holds equal importance, whether it is work-related, personal, or volunteer-focused.

  2. Prioritise and allocate specific time for tasks, fostering a balanced approach to productivity.

  3. Surround yourself with a support network of like-minded individuals, promoting collaboration and growth in both personal and professional areas.

  4. Maintain personal well-being through physical and mental self-care, ensuring you have the energy and resilience to tackle your various responsibilities.

  5. Embrace change and continuous learning in all aspects of life, keeping yourself relevant and open to new opportunities.

Teresa's outlook on life encourages her to live life to the fullest, let go of negativity, and appreciate precious moments with loved ones. Her work with Camp Quality has taught her to treasure these experiences, bringing both happiness and relief to children and their families. Her career and volunteer accomplishments serve as an inspiration for those seeking to create a positive impact in their personal and professional lives.
