Dive into the captivating journeys of our extraordinary members, where success and leadership unfold. Fiona Telford, a distinguished AWGN member from Melbourne, takes centre stage in our ongoing series. Her dynamic career in Government Relations, coupled with a passion for sports, paints a vibrant picture of accomplishment. Fiona has seamlessly advised Ministers, Victoria Police, and Golf Australia, navigating through diverse roles across multiple organisations. In a candid interview, she shares the origin of her government career.

AWGN: What sparked your government career and the diverse roles that followed?

Fiona: I started working in government in 2001. With a background in sports journalism, I aimed to be a sports reporter. However, after an internship at Channel 7, I found myself working with the shadow minister for sport in Victoria. It was unfamiliar terrain, but over the years, I learned the ropes of politics and built crucial connections. I'd say, I fell into it.

AWGN: What prompted your shift from government to media advisory and eventually to Golf Australia?

Fiona: I had the chance to move to Cairns for a year in an electorate office and as a media advisor. While still harbouring aspirations of returning to sports journalism, I realised that ship had sailed. The media advisory role opened doors, leading me to senior roles in Canberra, then back to Melbourne to work with Victoria Police and then the Victorian Minister for Sport. As for golf, it was a serendipitous encounter. Golf Victoria's CEO recognised the need for stronger government ties, and being an avid golfer, I eagerly embraced the role as the liaison between the Golf industry and government.

AWGN: What was Golf Australia (Golf Victoria at the time) aiming for with enhanced government relations?

Fiona: With Adam Scott's Masters win, golf was regaining popularity. Participation rates were rising, presenting an opportunity to elevate the game's stature, especially in Victoria. We set our sights on making the Vic Open the premier state championship in the country, advocating for significant government funding. We not only achieved it but surpassed the Australian Open at the time.

AWGN: From your Golf Australia experience, do you think the industry is reshaping public perception and encouraging a more diverse participant base?

Fiona: Absolutely. Participation rates are soaring, memberships are up, and the post-COVID boom has played a role. Golf, thanks to its continuous play during that period, fostered by our strong government ties, has attracted diverse participants - kids, women, and all-abilities. Sustaining this momentum requires collective support, from public facilities to private clubs, ensuring golf thrives at all levels.

AWGN: What can the industry and we as golfers do to encourage the growth of our sport and specifically enhance the continued development of the Women’s game?

Fiona: For women, word of mouth is key. Golf is still perceived as an 18-hole game dominated by men. It's about shifting that mindset and spreading the word about women playing golf in various formats, whether it's 9-holes, 6-holes, or even mini golf with the kids.

AWGN: What skills have you acquired and valuable lessons learned that have propelled your continuous career advancement?

Fiona: Patience is crucial. In my younger years at Parliament House, impatience ruled, but now I've learned to wait for things to unfold. Networking is also vital - I value my connections and still stay in touch with people from 20 years ago. Keeping those ties is essential for support and advice.

AWGN: When did you first start playing golf, and what drew you to the game?

Fiona: I was drawn to golf because my parents played. I started at the driving range with my Mum, liked it, and received lessons before hitting the course. Learning the proper swing early on prevented me from picking up bad habits.

AWGN: What advice would you give to new players entering the game in the current environment?

Fiona: Don't take it too seriously. It's not a high-stakes game, so keep it simple, have fun, and ensure you're comfortable in your clothing. Oh, and don't forget the sunscreen.

AWGN: In your experience, what social and networking advantages has golf provided, and how has it influenced your personal and professional relationships?

Fiona: Through the Australian Women's Golf Network, I've made great friends. I still catch up with old colleagues from the golf industry. Golf offers a relaxed way to be social, enjoy the fresh air, and have meaningful conversations. Where else would you rather be?

AWGN: Lastly, what is the best golf or networking advice you've received?Fiona: Keep your head down and follow through. The best piece of advice I ever got, especially when getting out of a bunker, came from one of my mum's friends.
