AWGN Member Spotlight: An In-Depth Interview with Ashlee Lines

In this edition of the Australian Women's Golf Network’s Member Spotlight, we are thrilled to feature Ashlee Lines, a remarkable woman who has made significant strides in the sports administration industry while cultivating her passion for golf. In this in-depth interview, Ashlee shares her career journey, experiences as a woman in sports, and her future aspirations.

Career Journey and Sports Involvement
Ashlee's career began in healthcare, drawing from her passion for sports that stemmed from her childhood experiences. Starting as a Sports Trainer at the North Adelaide Football Club, she transitioned to massage therapy, running her own business before taking on a role in sports administration. Alongside her career, Ashlee discovered her love for golf, which has become an essential part of her work-life balance.

Becoming Involved in Sports Administration and Football
Ashlee's involvement in the football industry began with volunteering as a Sports Trainer at the North Adelaide Football Club, aiming to gain hands-on experience and establish connections. Her dedication and determination eventually led her to become the Head Trainer, where she managed a medical team of doctors, physiotherapists, massage therapists, and volunteers. Ashlee has been fortunate to work with AFL teams and state-level programs throughout her career.

Challenges and Inspirations
Working in a male-dominated industry, Ashlee has faced numerous challenges, such as encountering gender stereotypes and external criticism. Despite these hurdles, she has persevered, finding support in her organisation and embracing healthy debates. Ashlee's passion for golf inspires her to overcome obstacles and lead by example for other women in sports.

"Over the years I have had quite several people ask which player I was dating or assume that I was in a relationship with someone involved and that’s why I was in the position I was in or they would “feel sorry” for my husband because of my choice of workplace.  You choose how you respond or react in those situations and rather than get angry or upset you have to realise that there are people in the world that are never going to change the way they think, I would politely remind them that the “stereotypes of groupies don’t apply here”. I enjoy being a part of something bigger than profit, sport has such a significant impact on our community and brings people together that are ordinarily in such different walks of life. "

Managing Career, Personal Life, and Golf
Ashlee emphasises the importance of finding something you love and committing to it. Her passion for golf has enabled her to maintain a balance between her career and personal life. Ashlee's favourite golf experiences include playing at Barnbougle in Tasmania and St Andrews in Scotland. Being a part of AWGN has introduced her to like-minded women and created a sense of community.

Ashlee lights up recalling this story, "Playing at St Andrews... we went to Scotland last year and miraculously landed a place in the Ballot to play 'The Home of Golf'.  We were so excited, and I had worked hard to get a handicap and be under 36 (you have to be under this to play there).  We arrived at a real feel of -3c, torrential rain, blowing a gale. Everyone who hears this story says, “true Scottish weather”, but when the locals tell you that you’re a crazy Aussie for playing in those conditions, you know it’s bad.  By the 9th hole I couldn’t feel my fingers or toes, we were saturated through all the wet weather, thermals and layers. Everything was so soggy that there was water coming out of our shoes with every step. BUT, we made it through, finished the round and if we can get through that day, we can get through anything! By the way, the sun came out as we left the town!"

Future Aspirations
In her career, Ashlee aspires to contribute to the success and growth of her club's Regional Academy, providing opportunities for young athletes to excel. In her golf journey, she aims to lower her handicap and explore the world's most amazing courses. Balancing her love for motorsports and embracing her diverse interests, Ashlee Lines is a true inspiration to women in sports and beyond.

Fun Fact
Ashlee shares, "I love Motorsport and cars in general – F1, MotoGP, Supercars. I love the feeling of the power rumbling and the sound of an engine… but I am also still a girly girl who like dresses and flowers."

Ashlee Lines' journey in sports administration and golf is a testament to the power of passion, determination, and community. Her story serves as an inspiration to women pursuing careers in sports while nurturing their interests, reminding us that with the right balance, anything is possible.
